Jordan
Jordan is
an ancient holy land where a lot of the Old Testament stories
took place. It is rich in archaeological ruins including its most
famous sight, the ancient city of Petra carved from rosy pink
sandstone. Petra was only rediscovered in the early 19th century
and you too can capture the experience of the explorers when you
arrive on horseback through the narrow gorge or siq that leads
to the fantastic Treasury building. Petra is also home to over
800 individual temples, tombs, shops, houses and monuments. Amman
the capital is a modern city but also offers some fantastic ruins
and a roman amphitheatre as well as wonderful museums. Aqaba on
the southern tip is a palm-fringed resort where you can go scuba
diving, snorkelling or try other water-sports or simply laze about
on the beach. Wadi Rum is the heart of Jordan - a mix of stunning
rock formations and the desert and was said to be the home of
Lawrence of Arabia. You can explore the desert in a 4x4, by camel
or on foot on a trekking holiday. Jerash is home to some wonderful
Greco-Roman ruins and has one of the most complete and well-preserved
roman cities in the world. The other well known site that Jordan
is famous for is the Dead Sea where you can float effortlessly
in the warm salty water. At 400m below sea level this is the lowest
spot on earth. All in all Jordan is a place that attracts lovers
of culture and history foremost. It is also now an up-and-coming
destination for the more adventurous with jeep safaris, camel
caravans, trekking in the desert, climbing and horse-riding all
available.
